Lip Glosses, the new nude!

Lip gloss has always been a product many women love or hate. Since the 1930s, when Max Factor created this product for films and TV, it has revolutionized the way lips are seen in the beauty industry. Nowadays, there are many finishes to this product. We have from a lightweight natural shine, to a very thick and strong high shine product; we even have them with glitter, which adds more to the shine factor of it. But is this product becoming the new nude? I think it has.

I remember my fascination with lip glosses when I was young. I remember they sold this lip glosses in a roller bottle with different flavors, and strawberry was my favorite one because it had a reddish tint to it, and tasted so sweet with a strong strawberry smell to it. Since then, I have really liked the finish the lip gloss gives to the lips. I like for lips to look full, big and sexy, and I feel lip gloss gives me that look.

A couple of years ago, lip glosses weren't really a thing, brands had very few shades of them or finishes; some brands didn't even carry lip glosses. But I would say since late 2017, lip glosses have become one, if not a high selling product on the lip line of any beauty brand. We can now find different colors, finishes, textures and even smells and taste of them.

To wear lip gloss, I recommend you to try a good one first. Buy one from a brand you know carries good quality of products, it doesn't have to break your bank; a brand that I enjoy and has very affordable glosses is Colourpop. I have so many glosses from them, and they all perform well and have beautiful finishes and colors. Another recommendation is not to apply to much of it, as it can accumulate in the inner side of the lip and can look a little gross.

A light application is recommended, and on lips that are dry and exfoliated. If you want to use a lipstick before applying a gloss, I recommend a regular cream lipstick, not liquid lipstick; the reason why is because some liquid lipsticks tend to come off when you add the gloss, and form lumps on the lips after a few minutes, which it doesn't happen with a regular lipstick. You can also line your lips with a lip liner of the color you want to wear, and use the lip gloss to fill in the rest of the lip. This technique is very popular right now as it was also very popular in the 90s too.

In conclusion, we can say that lip gloss is really a product you have to adapt to; it's not easy to use or wear, but is definitely very fun and versatile. A lip gloss can turn a very natural and low key look into something very extravagant, sexy, fun and fashionable. I hope you get to try it if you haven't!

How to build your kit on a budget for Makeup Artists.

When I began as a Makeup Artist, I really found difficult to get my kit started. Makeup is very expensive when it comes to build a makeup kit, because you need multiple products and brushes, accessories, a makeup bag, etc. But here I will give you some tips I found VERY helpful to slowly build your kit, focusing on having good and affordable makeup.

Aly-Hazlewood-Make-up-Kit-704x400.jpg

First tip is to prioritize which products are the most important to have of good quality. In my opinion, foundation is what can make or break your makeup look. Make sure you spend the most in foundation, having good products for the base of the makeup makes it easier to work and nail the rest of the look.

Second, try to find the stores or brands that can provide you with discounts or points that you can use towards your purchase, so you can save some money. A lot of makeup brands offer discounts if you are a professional makeup artist. You must qualify for it but it never hurts to find out to see if you qualify or not since the discount can be from 15-40% off. Some of the brands I know have this type of discounts are Nars, Charlotte Tilbury, Urban Decay, Smashbox, Shiseido, Sigma (Brushes), Bdellium (Brushes), Makeup Forever, Mac Cosmetics/

My last tip is focus on re-invest what you get as Makeup Artist into building your kit. I know you might have other bills to cover, but maybe is not a bad idea to get a part time in a Makeup Store and save some money while you build your career as a Freelance, that way you can buy and get free products from your job and work aside as a Freelance Makeup Artist.

I hope this article was helpful, starting this career is difficult, time consuming and can be a little overwhelming at times, but after you get going you will be the happiest Makeup Artist ever!

Bye Bye!

Best Concealers to have in your Kit

This topic is very interesting because now, everybody wants to have every shade of concealer; one to highlight, one to correct, one to cover imperfections, one to contour, and so on; but there's a lot of misconception or misunderstanding in what the concealer is good for. First, let's define concealer: A concealer is a skin like toned product that was first created to correct and cover blemishes, dark spots, scars, big pores and dark circles under the eye area.

There are also color correcting concealers that help to tint the undertone color of your skin or the spot you are correcting. This type of concealer you have to be careful with, because if you use the wrong color you might end up emphasizing or creating a whole new color of the spot you wish to correct.

I will go in more depth in another article on which ones are the color correcting colors of concealers and how to use them, but now I want to share with you my favorite concealers so you can try them and add them to your makeup bag or kit.

The first one is Kevyn Aucoin The Sensual Skin Enhancer, this is a foundation/concealer product designed to really correct and cover all you might have in your skin. This formula is amazing and super versatile, I love it because it helps to correct the skin, leaving a velvet matte finish that's so skin-like that you don't feel it in your face. It works wonders in the under eye area and correcting blemishes or any dark spots.

The second one is Kat Von D's Lock It Concealer, I fell in love with this product since the beginning. It is very covering and long lasting. It is also very versatile and leaves the skin with a matte finish but not cakey at all. It covers EVERYTHING, from dark spots, blemishes, pimple's scars, tatoos, etc. I love it!!

Last one, yes last one, because I'm not into concealers too much, I like to conceal and correct using as little products as I can; the last one is Mac Cosmetics Conceal and Correct palette. This palette is very versatile when it comes to have your correcting shades and conceal shades all in one. I like the formula a lot, is very covering and creamy; and it really does the job when it comes to conceal all the spots and the under eye area.

I hope this was good information, please let me know if you have any favorite products you wish me to try and what's your favorite concealer of all times!

Best Foundations for Every Skin Type

One of the products makeup artists recommend the most is foundation. Every woman wants to look young, fresh and have a flawless skin, but it is very important to understand that not all foundations work for every skin type. Here, I'm going to recommend my favorite foundation for every skin type, so you can have an idea of what to try or add to your makeup bag!

  • DRY SKIN: For dry skin my top favorite is Nars Sheer Glow foundation, it looks amazing and applies effortlessly. It has a sheer coverage but it's buildable and it leaves the skin feeling very smooth and moist. My second fave is Giorgio Armani's Luminous silk Foundation, this foundation leaves the skin with a healthy look and it's lightweight feeling; it also has a medium buildable coverage. From the Drugstore Family, my favorite is Infallible Pro-Glow by L'Oreal, this one has an amazing finish and it's medium buildable coverage.

  • COMBINATION SKIN: For this skin type I always recommend foundations that have a velvet to matte finish, my fave is Diorskin Forever Foundation. This one is perfect because it helps minimize the appearance of pores and the coverage is medium with a very natural matte finish. One amazing foundation for combo skin is Kat Von D's Lock it Foundation, this product is very good if you like a matte finish; it has a great amount of coverage, it's buildable, versatile, and gentle to the skin. My drugstore favorites are Wet n' Wild Photo Finish Foundation, Infallible Pro-Matte foundation, and Maybelline's Fit Me Matte Foundation; all of them have great finish, and very decent coverage.

  • OILY/ACNE PRONE SKIN: For this type of skin type you basically can use all of the foundations I already recommended for combination skin, but if your skin is oily and acne prone, then you need to use a non-comedogenic product. Non-comedogenic foundations will help your pores not get clogged and this will definitely help your acne to get better or at least not get worst. The foundation I swear by for this skin type is Shiseido Dual Balancing Foundation, I like it because it minimizes the appearance of pores, it helps the skin to balance the oils, it has a medium coverage and leaves the skin looking very fresh, moist and luminous. Another fave is Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-place Foundation, great coverage, great finish and amazing formula, very lightweight for a natural looking skin. From the drugstore family I like Neutrogena's Healthy Skin Liquid Foundation and Almay TLC Truly Lasting Color Foundation, both are non-comedogenic and have great coverage for acne scars and pore appearance.

  • NORMAL SKIN: Normal skin is the skin type every woman dream to have, since people who have normal skin can use any type of foundation. It only depends what finish and coverage the person likes.

Well, these are my very favorite foundations and I have them all in my kit; I constantly recommend them to my clients and fellow makeup artists.

Is Skin Care really important for a great Makeup Look?

One of the main questions clients and EVERYONE ask me when they know I'm a makeup artist is: what are the best brands for makeup that will cover all my skin imperfections? Unfortunately, there's no makeup in the world that will cover imperfections, but there's makeup that will correct and conceal imperfections that will make your skin look more flawless. The very first thing we should start understanding about makeup is that makeup is for you to look better, so you can feel good about yourself, and also to enhance your beauty but not create a new you. A lot of women use makeup to transform the person or themselves into someone they are not; don't get me wrong, if that's what you like you Go ahead and keep doing you! But my motto is, less is more. Yes you are already beautiful, maybe what you need is guidance on how to learn more about your skin, so you can choose the best products that will work for you.

Skin care is EXTREMELY, if not the most important part of makeup. If you have a good canvas then your painting will look amazing, even if it is the most simple one. Here I'm going to share with you some tips I follow and recommend in order to always have a young looking skin:

  1. MOISTURIZE AT ALL TIMES: Your skin is an organ, and like any other organ, it requires care. Make sure you hydrate your skin at all times, from head to toe. Since we are talking about your face, make sure you use moisturizer before and after makeup. Also, choose a good SPF, if you think you will be spending long hours under the sun you might have to choose a high SPF, like 50 or even 100, but if you work in an office or interior settings you can choose one from 15 to 30. Drinking lots of water is another great way to hydrate your skin too.

  2. HAVE A SKIN CARE ROUTINE BASED ON YOUR SKIN NEEDS: There are some products you need to always have in your routine, specially if you are an everyday makeup wearer: 1. makeup remover, 2. facial cleanser, 3. toner and 4. moisturizer. Choose each one of them depending on your skin type. I always recommend to consult with an specialist if you suffer from sensitive skin, rosacea, acne or any skin problems, so you invest in the right product that will help your skin get better.

  3. ALWAYS REMOVE YOUR MAKEUP: No matter what happened, if you got home late, if you had the worst day of your life, if you feel sick or if you are so tired that you don't even know who you are; PLEASE remove your make up. Try not to sleep with makeup on because when we are sleeping our pores open up to release toxins, but if we sleep with makeup, our pores get clogged and that's when the black heads or pimples appear. Also, you will notice the appearance of wrinkles, spots, or discoloration; and the skin can start to feel very dry or extremely oily.

  4. CHOOSE A DAY TO LET YOUR SKIN BREATH: I know, I know, I'm asking you to choose a day to not to wear makeup, but is for the sake of looking good! It doesn't have to be all the time, but at least once every 2 weeks, and use that day to pamper your skin. Maybe try that mask you always wanted to try, or get a facial done. The skin needs a break once in a while to restore and heal from all the products and chemicals we put on it, so make sure you give the skin that well deserved break!

Well these are my very own tips for you to have a great skin, I hope this was good information and that you put these tips into practice to look younger and younger!
